When do billionaires lose control? Or maybe it’s because they’re a bit crazy that they become billionaires, one might think. But almost always there is that moment when their economic success seems to cloud their judgment, or destroy filters in their self-awareness: it is that moment when they begin to imagine becoming president, for example, or when they come out of solutions for everything, ideas that shouldn’t come out of their bathroom but that they believe should be shared with the planet.
The thing crisis, the thing problem, the Middle East, the climate, energy, hunger, war: from King Midas to Getty, from Ross Perot to Trump, examples abound of these guys who tell you that he enough to manage anything like a kind of board of directors, with them as bosses, it’s practical, so that all the difficulties stop. And there are poor people to believe them, by the way.
We have Elon Musk now. He released a ‘peace plan’ for Ukraine a few days ago which is a terrible capitulationist disgrace, giving roughly half of the country to the Russians. We are not going to detail the enormities of his proposal, the most “space”, if we dare say, being that he released it without anyone having succeeded in suggesting to him that it was a stupid, unrealistic, hideously contemptuous proposition for a country, Ukraine, which he gave the impression of supporting until then. I imagine the very rich are as lonely and full of themselves as any autocrat.
He may have had a gin with Trump, Elon Musk. And if I mention it it’s because of his other whim of the week. Finally, after saying yes, then no, he wants to buy Twitter. He will then give an account to Trump, and to a bunch of conspirators of all kinds, under the pretext of “freedom”. We should let him, and even give him Twitter.
Like you, I’m far too addicted to this network, thinking I “follow the news” and the pulse of the world. You speak. I read one in a thousand interesting tweets and then I keep scrolling like a drug addict. A study cited by the “New York Times” shows that it works just like with rats: all it takes is an unexpected reward from time to time to cause addiction.
Long story short: let Musk handle it, I trust him to screw up Twitter in a matter of months, discrediting the few relevant things on it, opening the floodgates to all the extremist idiots on Earth. Millions of users will quickly get tired of it, let go of their addiction, leave the network. Twitter will fizzle out, die, we’ll get better. Billionaires definitely have the solution for everything.
