A variation of the 4 Series Gran Coupé, the i4 presents itself as the direct competitor to the Tesla Model 3, the best-selling electric car in Europe in 2021. With a significant advantage: with equal autonomy, the German is cheaper to buy than the American. The BMW i4 eDrive40 with a range of 590 kilometers costs 59,950 euros against 62,490 euros for the Tesla and its 602 kilometers. But above all, the I4 finally offers the customer a real BMW and the driving pleasure that comes with it. Its 340 horsepower makes it a real sports car, achieving 0 to 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds.
Rarely for the Bavarian manufacturer, the list of options has been reduced to reduce delivery times. But some are essential, for example the “innovation package”, which for 3,850 euros includes laser headlights, intelligent cruise control, driving assistant, alarm and cockpit display. These high-tech options are half the price of their Tesla counterparts. That said, selling such a technological showcase without offering this equipment is somewhat absurd: the driver who invests in a new generation of electric cars has a legal right to expect them. Especially since the comfort they provide on the road is indisputable.

If electric cars aren’t pre-cut for the highway, the BMW i4 is. In two days we really put it to the test by taking the Paris-Mulhouse, Mulhouse-Strasbourg and Strasbourg-Paris journeys. At 130 km/h, it took us just four stops every twenty minutes to complete this 1,200 kilometer journey. Bonus: BMW offers a year of free charging, the course only cost us the price of the motorway. By comparison, the thermal version of equivalent power, the M440i xDrive, would have cost 20,000 euros more to buy and more than 210 euros of the SP98 (8 liters per 100 kilometers). The conclusion is clear: the leaders finally have an electric BMW worthy of the name.

The cockpit of the BMW i4
Traditionally, BMW’s dashboards were oriented towards the steering wheel… But for a few models, the brand’s designers had decided to align them towards the seats. They have returned to increase the comfort of the driver who finds his center console. The general ergonomics have been improved and the feeling of sportiness is clearly enhanced.
Price: 59,950 euros.
