Elon Musk adds an unexpected and improbable amphibious function to the Cybertruck

The Tesla Cybertruck is expected among the first customers in 2023. At this stage, everything must be finalized in terms of its design and marketing. Except that Elon Musk has just added a last-minute amphibious function, which could well upset the established schedule.

We should no longer be surprised by Elon Musk’s announcements on Twitter. Despite everything, the whimsical CEO of Tesla still manages to react with his incongruous ideas. In a tweet from September 29Elon Musk announces: The Cybertruck will be waterproof enough to serve briefly as a boat “. It wouldn’t really be the first amphibious vehicle available. On the other hand, the timing chosen by Elon Musk to launch this new idea defies all logic.

The Tesla Cybertruck was introduced on November 21, 2019. Like all Tesla products, its development has lagged significantly behind the initial announcements. We still do not know the final characteristics of the product, which have apparently evolved since the presentation.

Cybertruck and the fads of Elon Musk

We cannot blame Elon Musk and his teams for wanting to offer models at the cutting edge of technology. The delay in product design is generally quickly forgotten by customers, once they have received their precious Tesla electric vehicle.

Cybertruck still seems a bit of a separate project. If Tesla is still trying to do more for the rest of its range, on the pick-up, it is above all the most crazy ideas of Elon Musk that take precedence. Among the features of the Cybertruck are:

  • An impact-resistant steel body,
  • Bulletproof glazing (with a magnificent failure of the demonstration),
  • An electric sliding dumpster flap
  • A loading ramp to mount a quad on the back of the vehicle
  • Power outlets in the bed to power tools
  • Capacities to tow up to 6.3 tonnes
  • Autonomy and performance worthy of the brand’s sedans
  • A 4ᵉ engine allowing to drive diagonally (crabwalk)

All the whims of the business manager must then be implemented by the teams of engineers, and their budget is not unlimited, which makes the exercise all the more complex. It will also be interesting to discover what has really been kept as innovations.

The idea of too much?

While Tesla announced in June 2022 that the Cybertruck design was finalized, Elon Musk has therefore just launched on Twitter: “ The Cybertruck will be waterproof enough to serve briefly as a boat, so it can cross rivers, lakes, and even seas that aren’t too rough. »

We already know that Tesla vehicles are waterproof enough to withstand a short waterline in flooded streets. There are many videos on YouTube to show this. It’s another challenge to get a pick-up truck weighing almost 3 tonnes to cross an entire channel.

If the functionality has not been integrated into the specification earlier, the technical development may have to start almost from scratch. The Cybertruck would be delayed for several more months or even years.

If the tweet above is to be believed, this idea of turning the Cybertruck into a water-capable vehicle has never been mentioned before: “ Having worked at Tesla, I can say with some confidence that design engineers are hearing about this requirement for the first time here. »

Even if one may want to believe that Elon Musk does not completely throw ideas into the air without having thought about their realization. He’s still perfectly capable of reacting to the news of the flooding from Storm Ian and launching this idea on a whim.

With what consequences? It will be necessary to wait a few weeks to determine if this has an impact on the release of the Cybertruck and its first deliveries. In the meantime, Tesla’s main competitors: Rivian, Hummer and Ford, are probably delighted with Elon Musk’s missteps.
