REPLAY. A trading error costs Electricité de Strasbourg millions of euros, but “will not have an impact” on bills

A big blunder by ÉS, which could be costly after mistakenly selling a large amount of electricity that it does not have. Also on the 19/20 summary of France 3 Alsace, Bruno Lemaire inaugurates the OVH datacenter in Strasbourg, and the Eurometropolis is looking for solutions for energy-intensive sports equipment.

This is a mess that goes wrong in this time of energy crisis. Last week, Electricité de Strasbourg sold nearly 8 gigawatt hours of electricity that it did not have on the European market. This enormous volume of energy is equivalent to the production of three EPR nuclear reactors (the third generation). A sale “by mistake” explains the EDF subsidiary.

To honor its commitment, the operator had to buy electricity at a high price, losing 60 million euros in the process, the equivalent of its net profits last year. A hard blow, but the supplier promises not to make its 550,000 customers pay the consequences.

Even before the cold weather arrives, the Eurometropolis of Strasbourg (Bas-Rhin), is looking for solutions in particular for sports equipment, which is often energy-intensive, at the risk of having to cut back on certain projects. This is enough to add tension in the midst of the energy crisis which is already of concern to local communities.

In Alsace, Bruno Lemaire was in Strasbourg on the morning of this 12 September, the Minister of the Economy came with Jean-Noël Barrot, Minister Delegate for the Digital Transition, to inaugurate the new OVHcloud datacenter in the Port du Rhin district. This data center was ravaged by fire a year and a half ago.

It had to adapt to new consumer tastes, the Miclo distillery celebrates its 60 years this year, and sees the third generation of the family settle at its head. However, it had to deal with the drop in sales of eau-de-vie.

Our series A place of stories returns this week. In the Munster valley in Metzeral (Haut-Rhin), a fairy and a princess have left their mark.

A mysterious work is installed in the streets of Strasbourg. On the Place des Halles, the sculpture of a woman walking on a pole towards the sky is intriguing. Decryption of this work by the American Jonathan Borofsky.
