SpaceX rockets, Tesla robots, tunnels… How Elon Musk built his empire

Jewels of the galaxy Musk, Tesla and SpaceX focus the spotlight on them. But the empire of the wealthy billionaire is far from limited to cars and rockets. The serial entrepreneur has also invested in the construction sector, which he intends to revolutionize thanks to The Boring Company. The company is working on creating more efficient drilling machines that Elon Musk intends to use to build tunnels under major cities at reduced cost. He also ventured with Neuralink in this quasi Terra incognita that is the brain, with the hope of creating implants which would give back to handicapped people motor skills, even would increase the human being by giving him new capacities. To this vast galaxy may soon be added Twitter. Despite Elon Musk’s brutal about-face in July, it is not said that the businessman can disengage so easily from his promise to buy the social network.

As it grows, however, this business constellation becomes more complex to oversee. Despite the enthusiastic promises of Elon Musk, The Boring Company has not yet convinced many cities: it has only one commercial network in operation in Las Vegas. The solar panel branch that Tesla offered itself by buying the manufacturer Solar Roof in 2016 is at a standstill: while Elon Musk promised to manufacture 1,000 solar roofs per week by the end of 2019, the company only installed them. around twenty a week at the beginning of the year. And the project to diversify Tesla’s activity in humanoid robots seems risky to say the least: the humanoid form is visually stunning, but it does not bring any decisive advantage compared to other more basic designs whereas it much (much) more expensive.

SpaceX, Tesla, Neuralink, The Boring Company... The American billionaire is laying the bricks of his empire one by one.

Elon Musk’s strength, however, is to dream big. The entrepreneur is not afraid to explore unknown lands and try to push back the frontiers. And we must recognize a real talent in this area: SpaceX has turned the space sector upside down with its reusable rockets and has established itself as a reference partner for NASA. Tesla, meanwhile, has managed the feat of making electric cars fashionable: it sold more than a million last year. The Musk universe is constantly expanding.
