To buy Twitter, Elon Musk sells… a perfume

Following a joke, the billionaire marketed a perfume called “Burnt Hair” last week. He claims to have sold more than 20,000 bottles, allowing him to collect two million dollars.

At the beginning of October, Elon Musk surprised everyone by changing his mind for the umpteenth time: he finally decided to buy Twitter for 44 billion dollars. After signing a purchase agreement in April, the businessman had been seeking to exit it since July. He now has until October 28 to reach an agreement with the company, failing which the trial which was to begin on Monday, but which has been suspended, will take place in November.

To have the means to buy back Twitter, Elon Musk relies on his subscribers. On October 12, he announced the marketing of a perfume and asked them to buy it. “Thank you for buying my perfume, so I can buy Twitter”has tweeted the billionaire last Wednesday.

Wildly successful products

Baptized “Burnt Hair”, or “burnt hair” in French, the sale of this one is the result of a joke, with the boss of Tesla and Space X who published the image of a bottle different from the one which is marketed, adding that it was created by “the same people who sold you a flamethrower” end of September. The perfume is indeed on sale on the website of The Boring Company, Elon Musk’s underground tunnel construction company. This company is also at the origin of the flamethrowers sold at 500 dollars each in 2018. There were 20,000 of them, allowing Elon Musk to earn 10,000 dollars in the space of a few days.

The “Burnt Hair” perfume also quickly met with success. During the first 24 hours, 20,000 bottles were sold according to the businessman. With a price of 100 dollars per unit (about 105 euros in France), it has already collected more than 2 million dollars. In other words, more than 20,000 people have bought this perfume without ever smelling it. The first deliveries are scheduled for the first quarter of 2023.

Accustomed to jokes, Elon Musk has already marketed other products in reference to his various jokes. In addition to The Boring Company’s flamethrowers, for example, Tesla launched its own brand of tequila in 2020 following an April Fool’s joke from its boss dating back to 2018. The manufacturer also put on sale mini shorts in red satin with the word “S3XY” printed on the back the same year.
